'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during operations against enemy positions south of the SOMME, east of HAMMEL, on 8th August, 1918. Lance Corporal FERGUSON was in charge of a section. During the attack on ACCROCHE WOOD when his platoon was help up by machine gun fire, he led a party of four men against the machine gun position which he bombed, killing three men and capturing six others with a heavy machine gun. Afterwards when his platoon Sergeant had been wounded he greatly assisted his platoon Commander in reorganising on the final objective.
