'On the 13th September, 1918 near LE VERGUIER North West of ST. QUENTIN, during a counter-attack a strong force of the enemy bombers repeatedly attempted to surmount a barricade in a trench leading to our lines. Private AXTELL advanced single-handed, under heavy fire, with a Lewis gun and compelled the enemy to abandon the attack at this point.'
