Found guilty, at sea, of breaking ship, missing transport: awarded forfeiture of 5 days' pay. Disembarked Suez, 18 May 1916.

Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 6 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 15 June 1916. Found guilty, 11 November 1916, of being absent without leave from 2100 hrs, 2 November, to 2130 hrs, 5 November 1916: awarded forfeiture of a total of 23 days' pay. Found guilty, 7 June 1917, of being absent without leave from Tattoo, 9 pm, 6 June, until apprehended by CQMS at 2100, 7 June 1917: awarded 28 days' Field Punishment No. 2; forfeiture of total of 37 days' pay.

Found guilty by Field General Court Martial, 21 June 1917, of, when under arrest, escaping in that he broke away from escort on 21 June 1917 and remained absent until apprehended by MP, 11 July 1917: awarded 12 months' imprisonment with hard labour; sentenced commuted to 90 days' Field Punishment No. 1 by Brig-Gen E.G. MacLagan, 6 August 1917; forfeited 100 days' pay.

On leave to England, 13 January 1918; declared illegal absentee from 1 February 1918; apprehended in London, 8 February 1918; found guilty, 17 February 1918, of overstaying leave: awarded 28 days' Field Punishment No. 2; forfeited total of 40 days' pay.

On leave to England, 21 November 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 30 November 1918.
