'At POLYGON WOOD. During the operations of 25/29th September 1917 this N.C.O. under his section officer Lieutenant Oliver, has assisted in carrying out reconnaissance of our Right flank in daylight on the afternoon of the 26th. while the position was still in doubt. Later the same evening he assisted in the supervision of the wiring of this particularly exposed flank. The subsequent two nights he again accompanied his officer and assisted most capably in the wiring of the whole of our front line to its completion. His personal coolness and gallantry on each of these occasions is deserving of recognition.'

Bar to Military Cross

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on 3rd September 1918, at Peronne. He constructed a bridge for motor transport under heavy enemy fire. On 5th Septembr, at Flanucourt, east of Peronne, he also constructed a field artillery bridge in full view of the enemy. Previously, he made daring reconnaissances for sites for bridges. He did excellent work.'
