'On the morning of 13th September 1918, near JEANCOURT North West of STL QUENTIN, this man showed great gallantry and skilful handling of his Lewis Gun during an advance under heavy Machine Gun fie. On reaching the objective he pushed his gun forward an extra fifty yards and beat down hostile fire while his platoon was digging in, thus saving us many casualties. On the evening of 13th September 1918 during a strong hostile counter-attack, he kept his gun in action in spite of heavy shell fire, and inflicted great loss on the German infantry until they were repulsed. Throughout the operations from 11th to 13th September 1918, he showed constant bravery and coolness.'
