Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during rescue operations near Anzac on 29th October, 1915, when he twice descended a mine shaft which was foul with gas fumes. He inspected each branch down the shaft, and was only just able to reach the mouth of the tunnel again.'
