"
The war of 1914-18 was an artillery war. Artillery
was the battle winner, artillery was what caused the greatest loss of life, the most
dreadful wounds and the deepest fear"

The 1912 divisional organisation provided for a colonel, known as the Commander Royal Artillery (CRA) to command the divisional artillery. He had a Brigade Major, Royal Artillery (BMRA) for a chief of staff. The position of CRA was regraded as a Brigadier General in July 1915.
The 1912 tables provided for a division to have three field artillery brigades each of 12 of the new 18-pounders. They also provided for a heavy or howitzer battery, but this was not raised in 1914. In March 1916 Division Artilleries were greatly expanded for service on the Western Front, with three brigades each of four batteries and one of three batteries, and medium and heavy trench mortars were added. This was changed again in January 1917, with the number of brigades reduced to just two. In February 1918, medium trench mortar batteries were reorganised and the heavy batteries reduced to just one, under Corps control.
On the Western Front the normal practice was for divisions in the line to have support from two or more division artilleries.

Field Artillery brigades were formed for infantry divisions. In 1914 and 1915 the First and Second Division each had three brigades equipped with 12 x 18 pounder field guns. In March 1916 a fourth battery of four 18 pounder field guns was added. At the same time a Howitzer Brigade was raised for each division with 12 x 4.5 inch howitzers each.
On arrival in France, the artillery was reorganised with each field artillery brigade having 12 x 18 pounders and 4 x 4.5 inch howitzers. The Howitzer Brigades then became Field Artillery Brigades as well. Because there wasn't enough howitzer batteries, the 9th, 12th, 15th, 21st and 22nd Field Artillery Brigades had no howitzer batteries. New batteries were raised for them, both in Australia and England, the 118th, 119th, 120th, 116th and 117th respectively, but only the 118th had joined its brigade before the artillery was reorganised again in January 1917. Of the batteries raised in Australia, only the 116th and 117th had departed before the formation of the batteries in England became known. Accordingly, the 116th and 117th were broken up for artillery reinforcements on arrival in England while the others were broken up in Australia and sent as reinforcements.
In January 1917, batteries were increased in size to 6 guns each in order to economise on battery and brigade commanders and the number of Field Artillery Brigades in each division was reduced to two. The 9th, 15th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th and 25th Field Artillery Brigades were disbanded while the 3rd, 6th and 12th Field Artillery Brigades became Army Brigades, not assigned to any division but more or less permanently assigned to the Australian Corps. Because the new howitzer batteries had not yet arrived, not all howitzer batteries were reorganised until April 1917.
A Reserve Artillery Brigade was created as a training unit in England on 28 November 1916 to train artillery reinforcements as gunners, the number of guns and qualified instructors in Australia having fallen too low for this to be carried out here.
A siege brigade was raised in April 1915, largely from regular gunners of the Australian Garrison Artillery and wore the cap badge of the Royal Australian Artillery rather than the " Rising Sun" of the Australian Imperial Force. It operated mainly in support of British units on the Western Front before it joined the Australian Corps Heavy Artillery in March 1918.

In 1916 one heavy trench mortar battery was formed in each division, numbered VnA where V was the letter V and not the number 5 and n was the division number, similar to the Medium Trench Mortar Batteries. The letter W was allocated for a second heavy trench mortar battery per division but these were never formed. Heavy Trench Mortar Batteries were each equipped with four 9.45 inch (240mm) mortars. These hauled ammunition for the artillery. Originally each division had a division ammunition column and three brigade ammunition columns. In mid 1916, the brigade ammunition columns were consolidated with the division ammunition column to economise on transport, each division ammunition column having 1,040 horses. When separate army brigades were formed in 1917, new brigade ammunition columns were formed for them. Only the siege battery ammunition columns were motorised, equipped with Peerless trucks.
