The Ordnance Corps were responsible for the Army's weapons and equipment. This included maintenance and repair - a role carried by RAEME today. In addition to the units listed below, each division had Ordnance men attached to its headquarters, who supervised Ordnance activities.
Two ammunition units were formed in July 1918. They were changed with the examination and investigation of weapons and ammunition found or believed to be defective.

The Australian Corps in France was supported by no less than eight British Ordnance Workshops in 1918: the 2nd,10th,17th,22nd,24th,29th,47th and 53rd. From September 1918 Australians began being posted to these units and in November 1918, Australian Ordnance Mobile Workshops were formed from the Australian personnel in them. Each Mobile Workshop (Medium) had an establishment of 10 officers and 270 other ranks.
